หลักการใช้ THERE IS/ARE ในภาษาอังกฤษ

There is/are แปลว่า “มี” มีหลักการใช้ดังนี้
There is หรือเขียนแบบย่อคือ There’s + singular countable noun
(นามนับได้เอกพจน์) ส่วน There are หรือเขียนแบบย่อคือ There’re
plural countable noun (นามนับได้พหูพจน์)
ตัวอย่าง
There is a cat on the floor.     There’s a bottle of soda on the table.
มีแมวตัวหนึ่งอยู่บนพน        มีโซดาขวดหนึ่งอยู่บนโต๊ะ

There is หรือ There’s some + uncountable noun (นามนับไม่ได้)
ตัวอย่าง
There is some oil in the bottle.     There’s some lemonade in the can.
มีน้ำมันอยู่บ้างในขวด            มีนํ้ามะนาวอยู่บ้างในกระป๋อง

There are หรือเขียนแบบย่อคือ There’re + plural countable noun
(นามนับได้พหูพจน์)    และ There are / ’re some + plural countable noun
ตัวอย่าง
There are some glasses on the table.
มีแก้วอยู่บ้างบนโต๊ะ
There’re some cartons of milk.
มีนมบางกล่อง

ลักษณะดังกล่าวข้างต้นเป็นแบบประโยคบอกเล่า แต่หากต้องการจะเปลี่ยนให้เป็นประโยคคำถาม (question) ให้สลับตำแหน่งของคำ There is / are ดังนี้
Is there……………?     หรือ Are there……………./
A : Is there some rice in the bowl?
B : Yes, there is.
มีข้าวอยู่ในชามบ้างไหม
มีค่ะ
A : Is there some tea in the cup?
B : No, there isn’t.
มีน้ำชาอยู่ในถ้วยบ้างไหม
ไม่มีค่ะ
A : Are there some people at the beach?
B : Yes, there are.
มีคนอยู่ที่ชายหาดบ้างไหม
มีค่ะ
A : Is there some water in the hose?
B : No, there isn’t.  There’s some petrol.
มีน้ำอยู่ในสายยางบ้างไหม
ไม่มีค่ะ มีน้ำมันค่ะ
